February.
By the age of four, most cats and dogs have dental disease. This means, at a
minimum, that they have tartar buildup and gingivitis associated with
chronic inflammation. Left untreated, dental disease can progress and be
linked to heart and kidney disease, not to mention chronic pain. Symptoms of
dental disease can include bad breath, drooling, loose teeth, chewing on one
side of the mouth, or inappetance (rare, because animals have an instinct to
hide pain and survive).
Most dogs and cats need their teeth professionally cleaned under anesthesia
once yearly. Routine home care can help in between cleanings and can
sometimes reduce the need for more frequent cleanings.
Home care can include:
Brushing with CET toothpaste, an enzymatic cleaner made especially for dogs
and cats
CET rawhide chews- coated with the same enzymatic cleaner
feeding Hill's T/D kibbles
or using Aquadent, a water additive
Any of the above can be used individually or in combination with each other.
Most importantly, though, if your pet already has tartar buildup and
gingivitis, a professional cleaning under anesthesia is necessary. Then,
when used consistantly, the home care products can help prevent or slow new
buildup.
So, flip your pet's lip and help us promote awareness for National Pet
Dental Month!!
